R-E-V-E-A-L-E-D: Nigeria making only $3 profit from oil barrel …As Senate kicks over high cost
The leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC), yesterday, came under fire in Senate, over high cost of oil production, resulting in a marginal profit of just $3 per barrel for the country.
This is coming amidst protests from sen
ators against the $3 marginal profit being made on a barrel by the Corporation, rhey called on the Federal Government to get the nation’s economy diversified as quickly as possible.
Information on the high cost of oil production which is $21.2 per barrel , almost equaling $25 per barrel oil price benchmark fixed for the N10.509 trillion 2020 revised budget , came to the fore when officials of the Corporation appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance.
Trouble started when its Chief Operating Officer (Upstream), Yemi Adetunji was called upon by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola to explain why cost of oil production in Nigeria is far higher than those of other oil producing countries of the world .
According to Senator Adeola , while cost of oil production in Saudi Arabia is $4 per barrel and $3 per barrel in Russia, it is $21.2 per barrel in Nigeria , indicating very poor marginal profit of about $3per barrel based on new oil price benchmark of $25 per barrel .
The NNPC chief in his response , attributed the high cost of oil production to series of peculiarities ranging from security to crude oil theft .
However, virtually all the members of the committee dismissed his submission as untenable , declaring that required actions must be taken to address the abnormality .
Specifically, James Manager, in his remarks, said the security problem mentioned by the NNPC , was not tenable as similar problems exist in all other oil producing countries without high cost of production like Nigeria.
“Even the reason that he gave for the high cost of production per barrel I think they are not tennable because wherever oil is produced they have their own security challenge including even Saudi Arabia, Iran Russia, they have their own unique security issues how is our own so peculiar that our cost of production is up to $21 per barrel.
“You also mentioned administrative issue, which are those administrative issues why are we different from the rest of the world. These are issues that the national assembly are supposed to take up,”he said .
Another member of the committee , Senator Shaibu Gumau, declared that the existing $21.2 per barrel high cost of oil production and $25per barrel oil price benchmark is not commonsensical economically for the country .
” I can’t just believe even common sense cannot agree with this not even the national assembly. How could we expect a situation where cost of production of oil per barrel is $21.2 and the revenue is $25 per barrel.
“Yet other countries in the world not one, that their cost of production is not even up to $10 per barrel. It is difficult to understand and I dont think it is only National Assembly, even the executive themselves should sit down and ask themselves this question because we are watchdogs.
” Not because we are watchdog that is why we are disturbed but it has got to an extent that they too should be disturbed and there should be a solution and if not there should be an explanation that somebody can understand and agree but common sense can not understand this,” he lamented.
Jubrin Issa, also disagreed with the NNPC official over the high cost of oil production by aligning with his other colleagues.
He said: “I am disturbed because I expected the NNPC to dwell more on fixed costs but surprisingly you are talking about administrative cost, security, these are variables and even the fixed cost on the long run are also variables which you can also work on them.”
However, the Minister of State for Finance , Clement Agba, intervened by explaining to the committee members that peculiarities cited as reasons for the high cost of oil production, were real .
According to him, the North Sea production cost is higher than that of Nigeria and that as an insider , details of the $21.2per barrel oil production is well calculated.
Aside high cost of oil production , the NNPC officials , were also challenged by the committee to be more opened with their federally funded projects , the totality of which N484billion is voted for in the revised budget
The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to take $22.7 billion in foreign loans.
The House approved the request after it considered the report of its committee on aids, loans and debt management.
President Buhari had said in 2019 that the loan was intended to fund key infrastructure in the country.
The Senate had earlier given its nod to the request in March. Lawmakers at the House of Representatives had earlier kicked against the bill, forcing debates to be suspended.
The lawmakers, especially those of the south-east caucus, complained about the government’s failure to include projects in the region amongst those to be financed from the loan.
However, following debates that were accompanied by pleas from House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, the loan proposal has now been approved.
Last month, both Houses approved an ₦850 billion loan proposal from the president, which is to be sourced from domestic markets “to fund critical capital projects in the 2020 budget.”
Last week, Mr Buhari also wrote to both chambers, seeking the approval of another $5.513 billion foreign loans.
Nigeria’s rising debt profile, as of September 30, 2019, was ₦26.2 trillion. Of this amount, total domestic debts is about ₦18 trillion, or 68.45 per cent. About ₦8 trillion are owed to foreign lenders.
Manchester United have officially confirmed that Odion Ighalo's loan deal has been extended until January 31, 2021 after they reached an agreement with his parent club, Shanghai Shenhua.
In a statement, the club said: 'Manchester United have reached agreement with Shanghai Greenland Shenhua to extend the loan deal for Odion Ighalo.
The Nigerian striker's stay was initially due to end on 31 May but he will now remain with the Reds until 31 January 2021, enabling him to build on an impressive start to life with the club he supported as a boy.
Ighalo's tally of four goals in eight appearances so far includes at least one strike in each of his three starts - against Club Brugge, Derby County (2) and LASK.
Today's confirmation is a timely boost for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as he continues to prepare his squad for this month's resumption of competitive football.'
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also thanked Shanghai Shenhua for allowing the 30-year-old to remain in Manchester longer than previously agreed.
"They [Shanghai Greenland Shenhua] have been great towards us, allowing him to play for his dream club," Solskjaer said.
"It's been a dream for him and hopefully he can finish what he started and win a trophy with us."
Odion Ighalo, who signed for Manchester United on a short-term loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua back in January transfer window, has scored four times in eight appearances in all competitions before the suspension of the Premier League.
"We stand with the Black community" Mark Zuckerberg discloses plans to use his platform to combat racial injustice
Zuckerberg has reacted to the deaths of a number of African Americans resulting from police brutality and he disclosed the efforts he's making to use his platform to combat racial injustice.
The Facebook founder mourned the murder of, not just George Floyd, but also Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others.
He condemned police brutality saying it "reminds us how far our country has to go to give every person the freedom to live with dignity and peace."
"It reminds us yet again that the violence Black people in America live with today is part of a long history of racism and injustice," he added.
He further stated that "the organizations fighting for justice also need funding" and that "Facebook is committing an additional $10 million to groups working on racial justice." He acknowledged that the money will not be enough but they are making efforts to put it to good use.
He added that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan have been donating for years to fight racial injustice and will continue to do so through their initiative. He said, "the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has been one of the largest funders, investing ~$40 million annually for several years in organizations working to overcome racial injustice."
He wrote:
"The pain of the last week reminds us how far our country has to go to give every person the freedom to live with dignity and peace. It reminds us yet again that the violence Black people in America live with today is part of a long history of racism and injustice. We all have the responsibility to create change.
"We stand with the Black community -- and all those working towards justice in honor of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and far too many others whose names will not be forgotten.
"To help in this fight, I know Facebook needs to do more to support equality and safety for the Black community through our platforms. As hard as it was to watch, I'm grateful that Darnella Frazier posted on Facebook her video of George Floyd's murder because we all needed to see that. We need to know George Floyd's name. But it's clear Facebook also has more work to do to keep people safe and ensure our systems don't amplify bias.
"The organizations fighting for justice also need funding, so Facebook is committing an additional $10 million to groups working on racial justice. We're working with our civil rights advisors and our employees to identify organizations locally and nationally that could most effectively use this right now.
"I know that $10 million can't fix this. It needs sustained, long term effort. One of the areas Priscilla and I have personally worked on and where racism and racial disparities are most profound is in the criminal justice system. I haven't talked much about our work on this, but the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has been one of the largest funders, investing ~$40 million annually for several years in organizations working to overcome racial injustice. Priscilla and I are committed to this work, and we expect to be in this fight for many years to come. This week has made it clear how much more there is to do.
"I hope that as a country we can come together to understand all of the work that is still ahead and do what it takes to deliver justice -- not just for families and communities that are grieving now, but for everyone who carries the burden of inequality."

The presiding Bishop, Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo has called pastors who still want churches to remain closed ‘agents of the devil’.He said some pastors were angry that he said churches should be re-opened.
“But they are too diplomatic than spiritual, so they just keep losing ground to the devil! Some Pastors who were angry that I said Churches should be opened and we are praying that Churches must be opened.“Now, ask them:
“Do you want Churches to remain closed?” They will just be looking at you. Do you want Churches to remain closed? because I know you are a celebrated Pastor.“Do you want Churches to remain closed? Then you are an agent of the devil.
If your children scatter around and you can’t see them; they now say when do you want them to come back? You now say, “anytime”, then you are a witch.
No, it’s just normal,” he said. Oyedepo added that some were upset with Church growth, saying that “if you ask them, “Do you want the Church to start going down?” because some of them are Pastors. Are you praying, “Oh God, let this Church go down in the name of Jesus. Let this Church go down!” Are you praying like that?“Find out why the Church is not growing. You must have a problem and most of the time, the problem is ignorance, not knowing what to do and not ready to find out.
There are many, many Churches that don’t have any platform of contact with their members. They don’t have any: no house fellowships, nothing.
They don’t have any and nature abhors vacuum. These fellows will start looking for options and alternatives: some to the cults and some to native doctors’ places.“We have tens of thousands of House fellowships: vibrant. Even under this lockdown, my own outreach office has created 82 new Home cells for our new converts.
There are many, many big time Churches, big networks that don’t have any contact.“We must have crossed maybe a Hundred Million (Naira) of welfare packages to our people since this lock down began.“There are some that don’t have any touch with them, you wake up in the morning and you are snoring? Not only to our people, to the environment, communities, maybe about 70 communities that we have been servicing with certain needs,” he added.
